Iowa women are better off with President Barack Obama in the White House, Jill Biden said during a conference call with Iowans tonight.“The Obama-Biden team is the right choice to strengthen Iowa’s middle class and to move women, and all Americans, forward,” the vice president’s wife said. The call, the first official campaign event for the Second Lady, was meant to underscore the importance of women to Obama’s re-election. Listeners were invited to volunteer or submit a letter to the editor.Biden, who was in Iowa in person last week to give a college graduation address and to stump for Democratic congressional candidate Christie Vilsack, said she can’t help but think about how far women have come in the last four years. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act makes it easier to challenge unequal pay, she said.“Iowa’s working women earn just 79 cents for every dollar a man does and Iowa’s African American and Latino women suffer even more from the wage gap,” Biden said. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, she said, insurance companies can no longer deny women coverage on pre-existing conditions such as breast cancer, and they must cover cancer screenings and mammograms. Soon, they must cover contraception and domestic violence screening and counseling, she said.In Iowa, 229,000 women on Medicare now can get mammograms and flu shots with no copay or deductible, she said.Biden said when the president took office, the country was losing 750,000 jobs a month. “Since the president’s policies started to take effect over the last 26 months, America’s businesses have created 4.2 million jobs,” she said.Biden noted that Obama’s appointment of Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court led to three sitting female justices for the first time (along with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, appointed by Democrat Bill Clinton.)“Since the day he took office, President Obama has been a staunch advocate for Iowa women, working to protect and advance policies that promote fairness, equal opportunity and a level playing field,” she said.
